North Coast Strings

North Coast Strings
Carolyn Grant and founding conductor Paula Simmons started North Coast Strings at the Museum of Making Music in 2008. For over 17 years, the program has enriched the lives of adult musicians across North County San Diego.
What began as a single group of 15 participants has grown considerably. In fact, that first concert lasted a total of 15 minutes. Today the program runs as a multi-section string orchestra, featuring violin, viola, cello, and upright bass.
Conductor Alyze Dreiling leads the ensemble alongside professional, education-focused coaches. Together, they help participants refine their skills and explore diverse repertoire. Meanwhile, the environment stays welcoming and noncompetitive throughout.
Some members are just beginning their musical journey. Others are seasoned players rekindling an old passion. Either way, North Coast Strings celebrates lifelong learning and the power of music.
Join Us!
North Coast Strings welcomes adults at every level. Some members played in school and have not picked up an instrument in decades. Others are starting from zero. Either way, you will find people in the same position.

The Gordon Grubbs Scholarship
Adult Music Scholarships give adults 21 and older the chance to join the North Coast Strings Orchestra. The program welcomes those with no music experience as well as those returning after many years away.
Above all, we believe any adult who wants to play should be able to, regardless of financial constraints. Accordingly, financial assistance can cover monthly dues, instrument rental fees, and other expenses.
