New Beginnings

Article, From the Director

Beginnings offer an opportunity for reflection and forward planning. This has certainly been true as I begin my tenure as Executive Director at the Museum of Making Music (MoMM). There are many schools of thought related to how people show up in the world. Personally, I believe in constructivism, which is an educational philosophy that emphasizes that people construct knowledge based on their lived experiences and social interactions. In this way, I carry forward all my personal and professional experiences as I begin anew at MoMM.

Having previously served as a Gretsch Fellow in Children’s Music at the Fred Rogers Institute, I have many favorite Fred Rogers quotes, which continue to resonate across generations and situations. As an early childhood music educator, I am drawn to his statement, “in fact, play is the real work of childhood,” that underscores the importance of play in child development. As an ethnomusicologist (someone who studies world music cultures), I am motivated by his repetition of the Quaker saying, “attitudes are caught, not taught,” which demonstrates how exposure breeds familiarity — and, to me, empathy. And now, as the Executive Director of the Museum of Making Music, I return to the idea that “often when you think you’re at the end of something, you’re at the beginning of something else.”

Since MoMM opened in 2000, the museum has been under the careful and steady leadership of Carolyn Grant who guided MoMM with great skill and thoughtfulness. With Carolyn’s departure in June, it is impossible not to recognize the end of an important chapter. But, as Fred reminds us, endings also represent new beginnings, and that is certainly how I feel stepping into the role.

I am enthusiastic about this new chapter for several reasons:

  • The museum is excellent. MoMM’s reputation, both locally and beyond, precedes itself as a well-regarded and loved institution. Often referred to as a “gem,” MoMM provides a unique and interactive museum experience for guests of all ages.
  • The collection represents opportunity to tell diverse musical stories. I see endless potential to build upon MoMM’s strong foundation and usher in new mission-driven exhibitions and programming.
  • MoMM encourages active music exploration. Inviting guests to develop and deepen their own connections to music aligns with my personal and professional passions. As a clarinetist, educator, and museum professional, I am deeply inspired by MoMM’s mission to celebrate and encourage music making.
  • MoMM staff and volunteers are exceptional. The people who execute the day-to-day work of the museum are creative, collaborative, and enthusiastic. This is a wonderful team to be a part of.

Stay tuned as we turn the page on the Museum of Making Music’s next chapter. I am looking forward to the journey ahead.
