What Good is Music?

Chances are you’ve got some ideas about what “good music” is. But what about the good of music? What is music good for? What good does music do? What good is it for you, for us, and for the world?

Guests are invited to discover an interactive exhibition that explores and asks them to consider these questions. Add your voice to the conversation about the good of music on the following themes:

What good is music for me?

Music can do good in your daily life. No matter how you participate in music making—listening to it, playing it, writing it, and more—it might help you wake up, fall asleep, get excited, or calm down. Maybe you move with it, feel with it, learn with it, or speak with it. There are countless ways for music to be good for you! What good does music do in your life?

What good is music for us?

Music is good for us in myriad ways. One of its most potent abilities is connecting us. No matter how we participate in music, and no matter who we’re participating with, music can connect us with an endless array of activities, feelings, places, times, and more! What does music connect you with?

What good is music for the world?

Music can be an incredible force for good in the world. It can propel social movements, change political processes, grab our collective attention, and even just make us feel better and closer to each other. How else can music be good for the world?

“Music education opens doors that help children pass from school into the world around them–a world of work, culture, intellectual activity, and human involvement. The future of our nation depends on providing our children with a complete education that includes music.”
